How an Arched Driveway Gate Adds Beauty to Your Property

Admin • Apr 15, 2019
Since at least Roman times, arches have been a popular addition to buildings and landscapes. The shape is used in many structures, from domed buildings to house windows.

Perhaps a less expected place for an arch is in the design of a driveway gate. Typically, gate arches are semi-circles on top of either a long, singular gate or a double gate. However, you can also find a gentler arch in the wave-top gate, which features a slope on either side of the arc. Below are some benefits of adding an arched driveway gate to your property.

Classical Appeal

As mentioned, the arch in a historical shape. When you see the shape, you automatically associate it with classical buildings such as those found in Rome. Through the use of Roman influences in your gate, your property can benefit from that association.

If you want to promote the classical appeal of the arched gate, chose one with a higher arch. The design itself should be classic rather than modern. Likewise, consider combining the arch with stone, especially white stone, in the form of entryway gate posts.

Grand Entrance

Because of the arch's classical appeal, the shape historically became popular in aristocratic homes. Indeed, when wealthy landowners gated their properties, they often used an arched wrought-iron gate. Therefore, an arched gate in your driveway can create similar connotations by turning your driveway into a grand entrance. This design works especially well with double gates.

Consider one of the more elaborate wrought-iron styles, those with finials, curls, and even powder coating that looks like gold leaf. Anchor the gate with stately stone posts. You can even have the driveway apron designed with brick or cobblestone to further the effect.

Welcoming Curves

Some arched tops are shallow, especially those in single gates. When you look at the top of these gates, a line across the top curves from one post to the other. Such an effect feels more welcoming than the straight top of a metal driveway gate.

If you want your driveway gate to feel more welcoming than imposing, consider looking for a style that features a single, shallow arch at the top. Some styles feature a second arched rail at the top, which doesn't convey the same welcome because it emphasizes the sturdiness of the gate. For a gentler effect, look for a simple style with minimal ornamentation.

Likewise, choose metal posts over stone. The goal with the minimal ornamentation and lighter-feeling posts is to create a sense of airiness with the gate.

Gentle Wave

Another arch shape that's not so imposing is the wave. These gates also come in both single-panel and double-panel models. The slope is gentle and the arch shallow, but you still get the classical benefit of the curve. The gentility of the arch can convey a welcoming ambiance similar to the one simpler curves do.

Wave gates can be simple in design, but they're often more elaborate. For instance, you often see a double-rail top, either with the space filled in to emphasize the shape of the wave or with more curves. Sometimes the wave itself seems to rise up from the top of a straight gate with more curves inside. You might not even have a rail top at all, but rather wave shapes that create a bigger wave.

Though wave gates come in many different styles, they do tend to feel more creative than the classical arch. A wave gate is a good option if you want an updated version of the arched-top gate while still reaping the design benefits of including curves in your hardscaping design.

The driveway gate is one of the first areas where you make an impression on guests. Choose an arched driveway gate that creates the specific impression you want to achieve. CCOI Gate Company has a large selection of arched gates for you to choose from.
